Meet Florence Star Award winner Tatenda [July '23]

This July’s Florence Star Award winner is Tatenda. He qualified as an adult nurse 18 months ago after switching careers and finds his new role fulfilling and interesting. Here’s why we’re celebrating Tatenda this month…

From engineering to healthcare

Not everyone begins their career journey in health and social care. Some people – like this month's Florence Star Award recipient, Tatenda – take time to discover their true calling.

“My own journey into nursing started with a change in career goals,” says Tatenda. “I originally wanted to be a mechanical engineer, but my heart led me to the path of caring for others.”

After graduating from the University of Wolverhampton, Tatenda began taking shifts in NHS trusts near his home.

“It’s been a huge transformation,” says Tatenda. “For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a nurse is going home at the end of the day knowing I've made a difference. Being able to provide comfort, care and support to those in need fills me with joy.”

Tatenda’s compassionate and caring nature truly shines through. He’s a perfect example of the “care about what you do” Florence value in action – we’re glad to have such a dedicated nurse on board.

Reliable and friendly

One of the reasons for Tatenda’s Florence Star Award nomination is his reliable nature.

“He’s really efficient and uses the Florence app to update documents and submit timesheets,” says Charlie, a senior consultant at Florence, “which makes life easier for everyone on the team.”

Communication is essential in a health and social care setting, and Tatenda shines in this area.

“We call him ‘Mr Reliable’ – a real team player,” says Charlie. “He lets us know when he’s available in advance, which makes it much easier to schedule his NHS shifts.”

Because of his diverse skill set, Tatenda can work in specialty wards where continuity of care and staff familiarity really matter. He’s also great at multitasking, making him a go-to care professional for managers at busy NHS trusts.

Working with Florence

“The Florence app has been a good companion for me in my nursing journey,” says Tatenda. “I can view the location, ward and shift times for each assignment, which is very convenient.”

He finds shift reminders, which are sent 24 hours in advance, particularly helpful because they keep him organised and on track. He lists the control he has over his work life as a favourite part of working with Florence.

“I appreciate being able to choose the shifts and wards I work in,” he says. “That means I can balance my work and personal lives more easily.”

Tatenda recommends Florence without a second thought.

“If you're thinking about signing up with Florence, I recommend you take the leap,” he says. “The flexibility and opportunities you’ll get are worth embracing. You won't regret being a part of this caring community.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Compassion and commitment

“I wish everyone could understand the dedication that goes into nursing,” says Tatenda. “It's not just a job – it's a calling to help people during their most vulnerable moments.”

Tatenda's commitment to care is an inspiration to all of us. We’re so impressed with his reliable nature and grateful for the positive impact he makes on his coworkers and those he cares for. Thank you, Tatenda!
